MacDEM (Mac)
An application to view and edit digital elevation model (DEM) files for Mac OS. It imports and exports the most commonly used DEM file formats. MacDEM permits the combination of shaded relief with hypsometric colors.
Relief! (PC)
Relief! creates shaded relief images, optionally with colors according to elevation, slope or aspect. Output images are geocoded for immediate use with MapInfo or as Windows bitmaps.
MapRender3D (PC)
MapRender3D Pro creates relief maps in both 2D and 3D mode. It offers different types of shading and coloring. Maps are colored on the basis of height, slope or exposition. It imports most current DEM file formats and projects DEMs to different cartographic projections.
MICRODEM (PC)
Displays and merges digital elevation models, satellite imagery, scanned maps and vector map data from different sources and formats. Creating colored shaded relief is also possible.
Natural Scene Designer (PC/Mac)
A 3D program that lets you design, render and animate natural outdoor scenes. It also renders two dimensional shaded relief.
Global Mapper (PC)
Global Mapper allows one to view, merge, and export a large variety of vector, raster, and elevation data sets. It can create colored shaded relief and change the projection of DEMs.
dlgv32 Pro (PC)
A free open source program by the USGS to view and convert a multitude of different data formats. It's relief shading capabilities are rather primitive, however.
Wilbur (PC)
Wilbur (free) can import and export data to and from many popular file formats. In addition, it allows data modifications with a number of image processing operations as well as height field painting tools.
DEM Reader (Mac)
DEM Reader can create shaded relief with optional hypsometric colors and contour lines from USGS formatted DEM files. It does not run on MacOS X.
GRASS (PC/MacOS X/Unix)
A relatively complex Geographical Information System (GIS) with raster, topological, vector, image processing, and graphic production functionality. It is open source and free.
