The sections Low-Cost, GIS and Graphics contain descriptions of programs used for relief shading. The lists are in no way complete and the presented software is untested. Expensive GIS applications are not included.
The Literature section also contains newer publications about analytical methods for relief production (topic “Analytical Relief Shading” and/or “Production Techniques”). The usage of suitable software is partly described.
If you are aware of any useful software to create shaded reliefs and/or you know any important publication about relief shading that is missing in literature list, please do not hesitate to contact us.
In 2002 Dan Van Dorn compiled an interesting comparison of the features and output of relief shading programs. He presented his work at a workshop of the ICA Commission on Mountain Cartography on Mt. Hood:
- An Evaluation of Desktop Relief Shading Software (Abstract) by Dan van Dorn, 2002.
- Table summarizing the characteristics of the analysed programs (pdf).
- Detailed comparison (pdf).
